Millions of people have glaucoma and aren’t even aware of it. Glaucoma is known as the “silent thief of sight” because it doesn’t have any symptoms or pain. Most people aren’t aware they have the disease until they begin to lose their sight. That’s why regular checkups are so important.
Now available to you at our office is the GDxVCC, the most advanced glaucoma detection technology available. The GDxVCC is a significant breakthrough over existing tests. The GDxVCC measures the nerve fiber layer, a thin layer of tissue surrounding the optic nerve, and has been found to be a more precise and accurate test than other technologies currently used to detect glaucoma. The standard pressure check (tonometry) is ineffective for detecting glaucoma in a high percentage of patients diagnosed with the disease. Visual field testing (perimetry) is limited to measuring vision already lost to glaucoma.
The GDxVCC exam is quick – it takes only 60 seconds – and comfortable. No pupil dilation is necessary; in fact, there aren’t even any annoying bright lights. The GDxVCC laser passes polarized light through the retinal nerve fiber layer, a thin, transparent layer of tissue surrounding the optic nerve within the eye. The laser measures over 65,000 points of nerve fiber layer. The measurements are then processed by a powerful computer that “maps” the nerve fibers and instantly compares them to a database of healthy glaucoma-free patients. A thinning of the fibers may indicate glaucoma.
The GDxVCC is part of our commitment to provide the most advanced and comprehensive eye care services. If you have any questions about your vision, the health of your eyes, or have questions about glaucoma or the GDxVCC, please contact our office. We are more than happy to help in any way.
