Optovue’s RTVue is at the cutting edge of technology and has features that enable us to discover even subtle losses in your optic nerve and retina and to follow these losses over time. This information helps with early detection of eye diseases and assists us to monitor the disease’s progression to determine the best preventive action plan.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is considered to be the “silent thief of sight.” There are no symptoms until the end stages of glaucoma in most variations of the disease. Therefore, it is critical for all patients to have routine eye examinations with special attention to evaluation for eye diseases such as glaucoma.
ARMD
Loss of vision with aging is one of the most feared afflictions. For numerous reasons, age-related macular degeneration is becoming a major problem in health care. In most cases, total loss of vision is very unlikely, especially if the signs of macular degeneration are detected early.
Diabetes
The early signs of diabetic retinopathy Diabetes are often discovered on a routine eye examination. These early signs are usually changes in the blood vessels of the retina. These vessels then leak causing retinal swelling and bleeding within the eye. This causes loss of vision. This swelling is very difficult to see, but with RTVue digital imaging, the swelling and bleeding can be located and proper treatment can be prescribed.
Technical Specifications
As the first Fourier/spectral-doman OCT system in the US, the RTVue FD-OCT set the standard for high-speed, high-resolution tomography scanning. Allowing discrete layers of the retina, as well as the full choroid, to be visualized clinically for the first time, the 5 micron resolution images have ushered in a new era of retina pathology documentation and diagnostic imaging. Comparative studies have demonstrated that the system offers earlier detection of minute changes in pathology than time-domain based systems, allowing for earlier intervention and better outcomes for patients.
The RTVue system uses an IR “live view” alignment camera to allow for natural dilation of the patients pupil. Scans can be accomplished. The infra-red fundus image is acquired without a flash or visible light to irritate the patient’s eyes. All captured scans are posted immediately for individual review prior to saving the data set. Due to the absence of constriction causing illumination at any phase of the capture session, repeat scans can be imaged immediately. The system provides a number of advanced features, designed by OCT thought leaders, allowing clinician to explore new clinical methods.
It is important to realize that with the new Optovue technology, your doctor is able to diagnose glaucoma, ARMD and diabetic retinopathy earlier and help you maintain good usable vision throughout your life with the use of pharmaceutical agents, laser and surgery.
Likewise, as with any other disease process, it is your responsibility to stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, maintain a desirable weight and exercise on a routine basis. If you have a family history of glaucoma make sure your family is checked as well. Also, always comply with both your therapy and follow-up visits.
